Synthetic fabrics are a huge source of plastic pollution. They’re bad for the environment, bad for our health and they contribute to global warming. Most backpacks are made of plastic and they’re everywhere. They began polluting the environment even before they were made, when the fossil fuels used to make them were extracted from the Earth, piped to a refinery and eventually loaded up with lots of toxic chemicals and turned into a fabric . They continue to pollute when in use and microplastics shed from them daily, damaging the health of wildlife and people and contaminating water and soil. Later, after they're thrown away they continue to pollute. If they are buried in landfills they create toxic pollutants including greenhouse gases, the cause of global warming; if they're among trash tossed in the ocean they wreck havoc there and also continue to emit greenhouse gases as they break down. And if they're incinerated they send greenhouse gas and other chemical flumes directly into the atmosphere. Give your college-bound student a healthy natural fiber one instead, such as those made of cotton, canvas, hemp, bamboo or linen. Here are some options for both all-natural fiber backpacks and another section of backpacks made of recouped plastic trash. Although I don't like plastic fabrics, and would not recommend it for clothing, remaking discarded plastic bottles into products like backpacks provides an eco-friendlier option for those who want a synthetic bag and it helps to clean up plastic waste.
