Fire retardants are an important consideration. All mattresses are legally required to be flame resistant. But chemical retardants long used in most mattresses have been linked to such health effects as cancer, immune system damage, endocrine and thyroid disruption, kidney damage and neurological harm. In addition to being highly toxic, some of the now-banned chemicals didn't even work well. (Common toxic flame retardant chemicals once used include Chlorinated Tris, the chemical removed from kids' pajamas in the 1970s due to its toxicity, and PBDEs. While no longer used they are still is many older mattresses and still a danger.) Sadly, a toxic brew you want nothing to do with called Firemaster 550 is still in use in many products. Many mass market mattresses also use a fiberglass barrier in addition to a variety of chemicals. Fiberglass can cause inflammation and irritation to the eyes, nose and lungs, scarring of the lungs, skin rashes and lung disease, including pulmonary fibrosis.
